LIMITED STOCKS - Mixed by DJ Deadly Turntable GSM 2017
Mixed by DJ Deadly
The blend is 55% Grenache, 23% Shiraz and 22% Mataro. The colour is mid red, with lifted bright fruits of raspberry and plenty of floral notes including lavender and rose petal. The medium bodied palate has a voluptuous palate with up front flavours of raspberry and wild strawberries. These are further accented with hints of toasty oak, cinnamon/nutmeg, pepper, and hazelnut with flinty matchstick notes. The mid palate is rich and full, with lovely richness and soft velvety tannins. The wine finishes fine and long with berry fruit and savoury notes. Drink now or over the next five years.
There is never a bad vintage in the Barossa with a wonderful continental climate, warm in the day, cool during the evening and dry with no humidity! The 2017 vintage was the usual solid vintage with good winter rains and a dry, mild summer. Flavour was excellent if you let the grapes hang long enough with 2017 being particularly good for Grenache and Mataro, due to the extended ripening period till late summer, early autumn.
The DJ Deadly Grenache Shiraz Mataro was picked from two different vineyard sites. The Shiraz came from a vineyard in the North-Western part of the Barossa, not far from the famous Kalimna vineyards. This cooler part of the Barossa, on stony/clay soils produces bright fruited and elegant Shiraz with a fine tannin structure. The Grenache and Mataro come from a vineyard at the Southern end of the Barossa which is on classic Grenache and Mataro soils, sandy loam. These types of soils produce wines that have good fruit and awesome depth and texture.
Each of the varieties are vinified and matured in barrel separately so the best blend can be composed just prior to bottling. All batches of fruit had wild fermentation, with the Grenache spending another month on skins, prior to being pressed, to add to the textural influence on the blend. The wine is then matured in used Hogshead barrels for twelve months. The oak is used for softening and making the wine more approachable, no oak characters are sought. The wine naturally clarifies, so the wine is bottled without filtration. We aim to make a bright fruited, drinkable wine with enough flavour and character to keep the drinker interested.
