Mixed by DJ Deadly Boombox Shiraz 2017
Mixed by DJ Deadly
Medium to deep red. There is lifted sweet berry fruit on the nose with a lick of chocolate and lovely sweet spices like cinnamon and nutmeg. The approachable palate has ripe summer berries with hints of musk and liquorice. The creamy oak adds to the mouthfeel and richness of the wine. The wine finishes with silky soft tannins and good length of berry fruit. Drink young while it is vibrant and fresh and it could even be chilled for Summer drinking.
There is never a bad vintage in the Barossa with a wonderful continental climate, warm in the day, cool during the evening and dry with no humidity! The 2017 vintage was the usual solid vintage with good winter rains and a dry, mild summer. Quality was excellent if you let the grapes hang long enough with the extended ripening period allowing amazing flavour development.
The Shiraz was picked from a single vineyard site in the North-Western part of the Barossa, not far from the famous Kalimna vineyards. This vineyard was specially chosen because it is in a cooler part of the Barossa so the grapes hang longer and are picked later. The cooler site, combined with the alluvial, free draining soils produce a more elegant style of Barossa Shiraz. There is still the typical rich Barossa fruit, but with some cooler climate spice, complexity and a fine tannin structure.
The Shiraz is fermented in a few separate batches so different winemaking techniques can be employed to build complexity into the wine. The techniques employed on the different batches included pre ferment maceration, whole bunch and wild fermentation. The wine is then matured in used Hogshead barrels for twelve months. The wine naturally clarifies, so the wine is bottled without filtration. We aim to make a bright fruited, drinkable wine with enough flavour and character to keep the drinker interested.
